SOTW V1 Ch6, Ch7 and Ch8

Chapter 6 was pretty simple with the story of Joseph. We did listen to the audiobook suggestion, the map work and tissue papered Joseph's coat.

Chapter 7- getting a little hard to differentiate some of what is happening. Since we already built a ziggurat, Mac wasn't interested in that. Read Abu Ali and did some of the other activities in the student book.

Chapter 8 was a lot of reading. We read the fairytales suggested, which was awesome because it brought pictures of the story we listened to to life. Didn't feel she was ready to create her own fairytale.

October Fun

Seasonal fun with a sensory box of leaves, red and black beans, pumpkins, spiders and fall cookie cutters. Mac definitely helped Ellie get interested and plays it often during rest time, but I'm not sure Ellie was ready for the box at two. Will try again next year.

SOTW V1 Ch5 Sumerian Dictator

I had to search for things to do with this chapter. Books that we read were You wouldn't want to be a sumerian slave, The Golden Sandal and The Three Princes. The cool thing was at dinner Mac was talking to her dad about how she didn't want to be a slave back then and what they had to do so I know she's getting it. I had her make a ziggurat out of legos (once again so excited...)  The playdough was a hit even if making the Sumerian Seal wasn't at first.

Very creative, made a seal of slaves carrying a king.

SOTW V1 Ch4 Old Kingdom of Egypt

The infamous week started where we learned about mummies and pyramids- yes that means we were going to mummify something. We read lots of books about mummification (Mummies Made in Egypt, Best Book of Mummies, I Am the Mummy Heb Nefert) and used this week to make it come to life. Also played the snake game. http://www.newbeehomeschooler.com/apps/blog/show/25932791-free-ancient-egyptian-printable-game-ancient-civilization-unit

Started out making a lifesize sarcophogi. This got the point across and Brog got to join in too.

Mummy hot dogs- a big hit!

Even turned a dice game into building a pyramid
Mike brought this lovely bird he shot all the way from Kansas for us. Can't you tell how excited Mac was to do this project!

 Have to spice it up

And it's mummified. Only took about five minutes. Maybe not the most realistic but got the point across.

SOTW V1 Ch3 First Writing

This chapter was a little tough so I added on extras. Extra books recommended from other sites: Egyptian Cinderella, Man Who Knew His Fate, and Egyptian Princess.

The scroll writing seemed too hard, so I showed her a bunch of examples and the necklace my parents gave me with my name on it when I was younger. I added a cooking section- found a recipe for Tigernut Sweets from ancient egyptian times. Both girls seemed to enjoy that.

Ellie's September school at Two

I was going to do the toddler boxes filled with several activites a few times a week, but so far Ellie hasn't been doing well with it. I've scaled back and we'll see how it goes. One sensory item a week and then a coloring/dot paint/sticker page a day plus lots of books. Thankfully she's pretty good at entertaining herself most days on top of that.

SOTW V1 Ch2 Egyptians Lived on the Nile River

I've always loved Egyptian history so it's so fun to be going through this material. Since this was our first map, we made a cookie map to get the layout of the terrain. I just used a store bought sugar cookie dough and decorated with different icing.

It's been really helpful to look at each chapter from different angles- reading the chapter, looking at the Usborne book, color page, extra books (this chapter Egyptian Treasures: Mummies and Myths, Your Life as a Pharoah in Egypt) and the projects. Everytime we read an Egyptian themed book with the red and white crown her eyes light up because she remembers she's learning that from the chapter. We also did the white crown and added the egyptian gold collar craft. Ellie got in on the action this time too.

Story of the World V1 Ch1 Earliest People

I'm amazed at this curriuclum- how much we are both learning and how interactive the material is.

Read the chapter and had her answer the questions and narrate back the lesson (work in progress but I think it's worth it). Read The First Dog and Little Grunt and the Big Egg, did the mapwork, color page, made the cave painting after showing her pictures from online, during rest time she made her own "hut" and we took a field trip to the ice caves in our area with some friends.

Story of the World Volume 1 Introduction

I've always loved history and never felt there was enough time to dig deep and explore different parts of history. I'm so excited to be teaching this subject. We chose Story of the World primarily because it focuses on the younger age and are loving it so far! We start the week off by listening to the audio version of the chapter and answering the questions along with having Mac narrate back to me what she's learning. Mainly doing the suggested activities in the activity book.

For the introduction we also read Me and My Family Tree and then made a family tree, Archaeologists Dig for Clues and I can Be an Archaeologist, along with watching the archeology episode of Magic School Bus. She was really surprised to see how quickly her family got bigger and bigger.

We also have to do the dirty dig activity with just a few simple items around the house.

In the end, I think the kids might be digging up coins for awhile. That or we will find them next year when we go to plant.
